Microsorum grossum ‘Laua’e’, (synonym Phymatosorus grossus) the Hawaiian Laua’e fern, is a tropical that is widely used as an ornamental ground cover especially in Hawaii where it has naturalized. The glossy, deeply lobed, ovate 2 foot fronds spring forth from a thick creeping rhizome and become progressively darker in deepening shade. It is easily established in moist but well-draining soil and will fill in disturbed areas in Zones 9-12. Elsewhere it is a candidate as a robust indoor or conservatory basket plant.
